The type builtin shell command under some shells (sh, bash, and zsh), returns information about a single word. This command is not built into the C shell, which is the default in FreeBSD (see which and where).

 sh$ type type
type is a shell builtin

 bash$ type -a lynx
lynx is aliased to `lynx -use_mouse'
lynx is /usr/local/bin/lynx

 tcsh> where lynx
lynx is aliased to lynx -use_mouse
