Internet Information Server, or IIS, is a service that runs on Microsoft server platforms (although 'lite' versions exist on the desktop variants) for hosting websites. It can be considered the biggest rival to Apache and is 'freely' available, but only once the operating system itself has been purchased (in comparison to Apache which is also free but typically run on operating systems that are free as well).
