Berkley Software Distribution. An amalgam of SysV Unix and a changes/additions that were requested but not addressed by the SysV makers. It was the precursor to the various BSDs as we know them today. See SysV and this excellent article by Dru Lavigne at ONLamp for more information on Linux and BSD differences.
