/etc/rc is a shell script that is run by init, which is the program that starts the FreeBSD operating system. Running the /etc/rc script is the first thing that init does when starting multiuser mode, the mode in which FreeBSD is normally run. By reading /etc/rc, you can learn a lot about how the system is put together.
